Ron Vaughn Steam-Bent Solid Shell, 5 1/2" x 14" Bloodwood with maple reinforcing hoops.

Sanded/finish: this solid shell has been sanded to a 120/220 grit, builder's 'working finish'. Our shells have a light lacquer sanding sealer coat applied for moisture stability during shipping. After applying the sealer, we hand-sand our shells with a 400 grit fine sandpaper for a very smooth surface finish.  The drum builder/owner can use or remove this light protective sanding sealer coat.
Builders will typically want to further sand these shells per to their personal preferences.  Our sanding produces an overall smooth working surface for the builder, ready for her or his further finish-sanding refinements and desired surface preparation.
Builders should have a good working knowledge of finishes and finish compatibilities.

Bearing edges:  (see included bearing edge drawing/graphic shown on this page), we cut a 45 degree inside bearing edge angle, with a modest 30 degree outside bearing edge angle.  The builder can blend/sand edges to their preference of a blended smooth radius edge(s), or sharper bearing edge(s).  Shell bearing edge, edge-tip contact surfaces are lightly ground flat & checked on dead-flat, surface-ground, thick granite-stone plates, with approx. .125 wide top-most edge, allowing builders to finish-sand the 45/30 degree bearing edges to the builder's personal preferences and liking, i.e., a smoother radius bearing edge, more closely matching the inside radius of most commercially made synthetic/mylar heads, or a sharper radius bearing edge.  (see also Starrett-square image of each of our individual shells for vertical profile on granite stone)

Snare beds: builder cuts/files/prepares snare bed(s) to their own personal specifications for the snare type and snare bed depth they intend.
Ron Vaughn Solid Shells arrive to the builder without snare beds cut or machined.

Serial Number inside shell: unique shell serial numbers identify each of our one-of-a-kind shells individually.  Builders can also remove Ron Vaughn serial numbers via fill and/or sanding, if they are not interested in historically authenticating their solid shells.

IMPORTANT advice to all potential buyers:  study each of our individual shell's images thoroughly and carefully.  Take your time.
If you have questions, we encourage you to ask your questions before purchasing any of our shells.
If you are inexperienced and new to drum building, we encourage you to seek the advice of other builders more experienced before making any purchase here.

The ultimate sound of any drum depends greatly, (and mostly), on the experience and skill of the builder.  Fine drum shells of any kind, in and of themselves, are not any guarantee of resulting good or great sounding drums.
Fine drum shells are, however, potentially, a great start to very good or great resulting drums.
